Chinese Wikipedia —

This file reproduces a published encyclopedia article for research. No original standard is authored here.

Chinese Wikipedia is not a breed society, but the article is built from Chinese monographs that are themselves important breed-description sources: 中国梅山猪 (Shanghai Jiading Meishan Breeding Center et al., 2014), 中国太湖猪 (Taihu Pig Breeding Committee, 1991), and 上海四大名猪 (Shen Fulin and Lu Xuelin, eds., 2019). Those books were not obtained as full texts for this compilation; the Wikipedia article is reproduced because it is the publicly available summary that cites them, including numeric body-size figures attributed to 中国梅山猪.

The article also records that a Shanghai local standard, 《上海市地方标准·梅山猪》, was issued in 2010. The full text of that local standard was not located on a public URL at collection time.

English translation

The Meishan pig is a Chinese domestic pig breed, a type-group of the Taihu pig. It is native to Jiading District of Shanghai and to Taicang and Kunshan in Jiangsu, and is distributed mainly along both banks of the Liu River (浏河). Meishan pigs have been exported to Albania, France, Thailand, Hungary, Romania, the DPRK, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries; France, Japan, and the United States have all carried out systematic research on them.

The Meishan originally had three types: Small Meishan (popularly called “chaoban face” / 朝板脸), the Dagela type (popularly called “camel foot” / 骆驼脚), and the Malu type (popularly called “wooden-fish head” / 木鱼头). After repeated crossing and selection among these types, two forms classified by body size gradually emerged in the 1960s–1970s: the Medium Meishan (also called Zhong Meishan or coarse-footed Meishan) and the Small Meishan (also called Xiao Meishan or fine-footed Meishan). The Medium Meishan is larger, with thicker and coarser skin and many deep forehead wrinkles; the Small Meishan is smaller, with thinner skin and fewer wrinkles. Both have the “four white feet” (四白脚) trait on the limbs.

The Meishan pig was listed in the National Catalogue of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources for Protection in 2000. The Shanghai Jiading District Meishan Pig Breeding Center was formally established in 2003 and was designated a national-level Meishan pig resource conservation farm in 2008. In 2010, the Shanghai Local Standard · Meishan Pig was issued.
