Taiwan Council of Agriculture knowledge portal — 梅山豬 (Meishan pig)
This file reproduces a published official-extension breed profile for research. No original standard is authored here.
This is the Meishan entry in the “Pig Theme Hall” (豬主題館) of Taiwan’s Agricultural Knowledge Portal (農業知識入口網), operated under the Ministry of Agriculture (formerly Council of Agriculture). It describes the breed as imported to Taiwan from Japan in 1994 and gives a conformation summary used by Taiwan’s Livestock Research Institute.

(Meishan)

**Meishan pig (Meishan)
Breed characteristics**
The head is large and the forehead broad; there are many wrinkles on the forehead. The ears are large, soft, and pendulous; the ear tips are level with the corners of the mouth or extend beyond them. [The back is] concave; the belly is pendulous. The skin is thick and coarse. Coat color is black or bluish gray; the hair is sparse. The limbs are short and thick, with white extremities, commonly called “four white feet” (四白腳). Teats are mostly 8 pairs. In Livestock Research Institute records, primiparous gilts have lower litter size, but multiparous sows average 12 or more piglets.
Breed origin
The Meishan pig is native to Meishan County, Jiangsu Province, mainland China. From 1974 onward, together with other pig breeds of the Taihu region — Erhualian, Fengjing, Jiaxing Black, Hengjing, Mi pig, and Shawutou — it has been collectively called the “Taihu pig.” Taihu pigs are famous worldwide for high prolificacy and have the highest litter size among known pig breeds in the world. The Meishan is not only internationally recognized for prolificacy and reproductive efficiency; Japanese experimental research has also indicated that the Meishan is today the Chinese pig with the most ancestral character and the greatest purity. Its greatest difference from ordinary pig breeds is that it retains the purest ancestral character, whereas ordinary breeds have gradually lost ancestral character through crossing. Therefore the Meishan is widely valued worldwide and is an important genetic resource for improving prolificacy in pigs. Neighboring Japan imported Meishan pigs from Jiangsu Province, China, in 1986 and carried out a series of performance surveys and crossing trials. The Livestock Research Institute imported 2 boars and 3 sows from Japan in July 1994 and began breeding in early August of the same year.
Livestock germplasm records
Recorded items:
- Long-lived healthy sow
Born 29 April 1995, a first-generation descendant of the original imported pigs. At 3,300 days of age (May 2004) it was still moving freely, and may be called Taiwan’s longest-lived Meishan pig.
- In the Livestock Research Institute conservation population there were 5 breeding sows that farrowed 18 piglets. The sow born 25 April 1995, ear number 0004-12, had the most live piglets, 16.
