Main production area and distribution: The central production area of the Small Meishan pig is along both banks of the Liuyang River [浏阳河; in Jiangsu usage this refers to the Liuhe / Taicang river system] in Taicang, Jiangsu. The central production area of the Medium Meishan pig is in Kunshan, Jiangsu, and Jiading, Shanghai, among other places. Early on the breed was not widely distributed; it was found mainly in parts of the eastern townships of Taicang, Kunshan, and Changshu in Jiangsu. Formation history: According to the Shanghai County Gazetteer of the Tongzhi reign (1862–1872): “The county produces [pigs] with thick and wide hides, some weighing more than two hundred catties.” This pig was large-bodied with coarse bone, a large head, thick skin, and many deep wrinkles. Coat colors included solid black, solid white, and black-and-white piebald. It was the ancestor of the “Dahualian” (Big Flowery Face) pig.
